The HoloForge team, the XR department of Asobo Studio, collaborated with Microsoft for many months to deliver one of the deepest and most immersive virtual flight experiences ever created: Microsoft Flight Simulator VR.
This development marked a major milestone for the game. For the first time, players could experience flight at full scale, directly from the cockpit, with the precision and realism that have made the simulator so renowned.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the Asobo and Microsoft teams, VR was integrated without any compromise on performance or visual fidelity, preserving all the richness of the game engine in stereoscopic 3D.
Adapting a simulator of such scale to virtual reality was a considerable challenge.
Our teams thoroughly reworked the game engine to make it compatible with stereoscopic rendering and multi-screen display, while optimizing performance using advanced techniques such as stencil masking and stereo instancing.
This evolution relied on the OpenXR standard, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of headsets : Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus, Valve, HTC, and HP Reverb G2.
The goal: to deliver a smooth, universal, and accessible flight experience for everyone.
The integration of virtual reality into Microsoft Flight Simulator was designed with and for the community.
Thanks to the feedback from our players, we were able to implement VR into Microsoft Flight Simulator. Their insights guided the entire development process, helping us improve the ergonomics, readability, and sense of presence within the cockpit.
We are grateful to count on their continued support as we keep developing and enhancing the game together.
