For the Ethiopian site of Lalibela, Africa’s largest Christian site and a UNESCO World Heritage treasure, HoloForge designed and developed a traveling mixed reality exhibition. Our goal: to promote this jewel of Ethiopian heritage through a digital archive for its preservation.
The Lalibela project addressed a threefold strategic challenge:
We designed an experience where mixed reality immerses the visitor in the heart of the site, revealing the historical, religious, and aesthetic richness of the eleven rock-hewn churches. Guided by a holographic companion, the user embarks on a true time-travel journey in three phases:
The Time Journey: The experience retraces the history of the site from the first millennium to today, illustrating the geological and architectural phases that enabled its construction.
At the Heart of Gyorgis: The user is then transported in front of Bete Gyorgis, the site’s most impressive cruciform church, to admire its details and understand its symbolic importance.
The Cultural and Religious Context: The final phase provides insight into the role of this sacred site, explaining its essential place for pilgrims and Ethiopian Christian faith.
This approach fits seamlessly into a larger multi-device exhibition. It complements the more traditional elements of the exhibition, making the visit more complete, immersive, and engaging.
Such an ambitious project could only be achieved through the synergy of leading partners. We are proud to have collaborated with:
