Industrial Maintenance and Safety with HoloLens

Improving Boiler Shop Productivity Through Mixed Reality

Naval Group, Europe’s leader in naval defense, partnered with HoloForge to design an application on HoloLens for boiler shop, assembly, and maintenance teams.

The goal was clear: optimize on-site productivity by providing digital tools tailored to the demanding environments of frigates. The solution was awarded the first prize “Engineering & Construction” at the Laval Virtual trade show, highlighting both its technical innovation and its concrete benefits for industry.

Meeting Operational Challenges in Confined Spaces

Working in the restricted areas of a ship presents several challenges: complex navigation, time-consuming paper documentation, and the need to coordinate multiple assembly phases in the same area.

The application addresses these challenges by centralizing information (3D plans, navigation, documentation) in a single interface. It reduces errors, speeds up the training of new recruits, and improves team coordination in real time. This approach fully aligns with the digital transformation goals of Industry 4.0.

The operator begins by locating the intervention area using a 3D plan of the FREMM (multi-mission frigate). On-site, he visualizes the piping as holograms superimposed on the real environment. To assist in assembly, he can display mounting plans and nearby part references, all while keeping his hands free, ensuring a smooth and safe intervention.

At the end, an enriched intervention report (photos, comments) is generated and transmitted to the design office, ensuring greater traceability and operational continuity.

In the Engineering & Construction category, HoloForge won the award for Best Application at Laval Virtual with its holographic assembly assistance solution developed for Naval Group.

A question ?

How does mixed reality improve productivity in naval boiler making and maintenance?

By superimposing 3D holograms onto real installations, operators have visual instructions directly in their field of view. They save time, reduce errors, and keep their hands free to work safely.

What are the benefits for training new recruits at Naval Group?

The application provides immediate immersion in the work environment. 3D plans, holographic markers, and digital documentation make learning easier and accelerate onboarding, even in complex and confined spaces.

Does the project support Industry 4.0 digital transformation?

Yes. By centralizing all data (plans, documentation, intervention reports) in a single interface, the application supports the naval industry’s digitalization goals while enhancing collaboration, traceability, and operational efficiency.
